Fun Tricks To Teach Your Puppy

You can turn the commands into fun, after your puppy has learned some of the basic commands. For example, put the puppy in a sit-stay position. Then, back off a couple of feet. Show him a favorite toy and then toss it to him. Don’t throw it so high he can’t catch it.

Have the puppy go to a sit-stay position and then have him watch as you hide his favorite toy. Keep him in the sit-stay position for a moment longer. You can even say something like “where is teddy?” Then, give him the release to go and find the toy. Say something like “find teddy”. Help him locate the toy if can’t figure out what to do.

By using the “as” routine, you can teach your puppy practically any trick. The tricks must be one word commands and tricks that he can do by himself. Puppies love to roll over onto their back and wiggle back and forth. Whenever you find him in this position, use it an opportunity to teach him how to roll over.

As your puppy matures, he will learn to understand more of your language. Then, you will be able to use phrases and have him do more tricks. For example, instead of saying “roll over”, you can say something like “Sparky, can you do your rollover exercises?” For starters, be sure to keep it very simple.

You can add additional tricks after your puppy has mastered the sit-stay command. Take a small dog biscuit and balance it on top of his nose. While balancing the biscuit, say “on trust.” You may need to hold his head steady at first.

After he has held the biscuit for a couple of seconds, you can give him the “Okay” or “Take it” command. You can then lift his chin up gently and quickly, which will toss the biscuit into the air for him to catch.

Both puppies and kids love to play hide-and-seek, but really, anyone can join in the fun. In the beginning, you will need to squat down to the dog’s level, since he finds you by your scent. Have him go into the sit-stay position. Be sure he is able to find you, even if that means giving him clues or calling out his name. Let him find you instantly.

Shake is an old favorite and is quite each to each. If you touch puppy’s toes, most of them will raise up their paw. You can then gently lift it and say “shake hands” or “give me your paw”. Later on, you can say “wave goodbye”. But for now, lets stick with a handshake.
